Cling film for tattoos

Updated: 13 October 2026

Cling film is the simplest dressing for a fresh tattoo. It protects the wound from dirt and from rubbing against clothes in the first days of healing. Unlike second skin, it is changed several times a day.

How to care for a tattoo under cling film

The Dirty Lust aftercare instructions are:

  • Remove the film about 2 to 3 hours after the session.
  • Wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild soap, for example a hypoallergenic one.
  • Pat it dry with a paper towel and apply a thin layer of ointment, such as Bepanthen.
  • Cover it with fresh film. Repeat the washing every 3 to 4 hours for the next three days, including overnight.

When you change the dressing, let the skin breathe for 10 to 15 minutes. After a few days, only use film if clothing or work could irritate the tattoo.

What to avoid

Do not scratch peeling skin or pick scabs. Throughout healing, avoid soaking the tattoo, saunas and sun. The full instructions are on our process page, and the stages of healing are covered in Tattoo healing: stages and aftercare.
