Tattoo healing instructions

Following the guidance below carefully will shape how your tattoo looks and lasts. Use the instructions that match the dressing your artist applied.

Cling film dressing

  1. Remove the dressing after about 2-3 hours.
  2. Wash the tattoo thoroughly with lukewarm water and soap (ideally a hypoallergenic natural soap or intimate wash). Avoid prolonged contact with water. During healing (about 2 weeks) keep showers short so the tattoo does not soak.
  3. Pat the tattoo dry with a paper towel and apply a thin layer of ointment such as Bepanthen, then cover it again with a fresh cling film dressing.
  4. Clean the tattoo every 3-4 hours during the day and re-apply the cling film. When changing the dressing, let the skin breathe for about 10-15 minutes.
  5. Keep the dressing on at night as well.
  6. Repeat steps 2-5 for the next three days.
  7. After that, try to leave the cling film off unless clothing or daily activities could irritate the tattoo.
  8. After a few days the tattoo will start to peel and itch. Never scratch it or pick at flaking skin. Keep applying ointment to soothe the itching. If scabs form, do not pull them off either — the area will simply take longer to heal, but consistent care will let it heal cleanly.
  9. Once the peeling is done, the tattoo still needs time to fully heal. The skin cycle takes up to 30 days, which is also how long it takes for the tattoo to be covered by new epidermis.
  10. Throughout healing, avoid soaking the tattoo (pools, sea, lakes, etc.), saunas, and sunbathing.

Second Skin dressing

  1. Keep the dressing on for one to four days, according to your artist's instructions.
  2. After removing the film, wash the tattoo very thoroughly.
  3. Pat the tattoo dry with a paper towel and apply a thin layer of ointment such as Bepanthen.
