Forearm tattoos

A forearm is not a flat sheet of paper. A motif changes appearance when you rotate your arm, bend your wrist or pull on a long sleeve. Try the design with your arm in a natural position rather than placing a stencil where it looks good in just one photograph.

Inner or outer forearm?

The inner forearm lets you see your own tattoo more often. The outer forearm is visible to others during many everyday movements. Neither is automatically better. Consider the direction of the motif, existing tattoos and how often you want to show it.

Photograph both sides of your arm. For a long motif, such as a plant or snake, check whether its axis suits the forearm's shape. For a round symbol, make sure it does not sit awkwardly close to the elbow crease or wrist.

Orientation and scale

You may want to read the tattoo from your own point of view. An artist might suggest another orientation that works better with the arm's movement or a future composition. There is no rule for every motif. Try both versions, stand before a mirror and view the arm relaxed and bent.

Size needs to accommodate the details. Fine lettering and a realistic portrait need different amounts of space even if their maximum dimensions match. If you plan a sleeve, decide whether the forearm tattoo will be its focal point or one stage of a larger project.

What about existing tattoos?

A new piece can relate to older work through colour, outline or subject. It need not match the style exactly, but the spacing should be intentional. Show the artist the whole arm, not only the empty patch. If an old tattoo needs covering, that calls for a separate cover-up assessment.

Our arm tattoo page compares placement areas, while the sleeve-planning guide covers the larger composition.

Portfolio and consultation

Common questions

Should forearm lettering face me?

That is a design choice. Try both orientations and see how they look with your arm at rest.

Can a small piece become part of a sleeve later?

Often, yes, but reserve space and discuss the direction of the larger composition before tattooing.

What should I send for a quote?

Your motif, approximate size and photos of both sides of your forearm.
