Blackwork is a tattoo style done entirely in black ink, built on strong contrast between solid black and bare skin. It covers geometric patterns, ornaments, woodcut-style graphics and large, fully saturated areas.
What does blackwork look like in practice?
In blackwork, clear contrast is everything. The artist builds the image from solid black areas, lines and dots, and leaves the light parts as untouched skin. The style works for small symbols as well as sleeves, leg sleeves and back pieces. A related technique is dotwork, where shading is created from dots.
What should you keep in mind?
- Large black areas need several sessions and careful healing.
- Well-planned blackwork follows the shape of the muscles and bones.
- Black is also a common base for a cover-up when an old, dark tattoo has to disappear.
