Lining needles are needle groupings designed for drawing lines, the outline of a tattoo. Their points are gathered tightly into one spot, so the ink goes into the skin in a narrow, even track.
How are they different from shading needles?
Lining needles have tightly packed points, while shading needles have points spread wider. The most popular type of lining needle is the round liner. The number of points decides the line weight: from a single needle in fine-line tattoos to thick groupings used in traditional work.
Why does the outline matter so much?
The outline defines the shape of the whole design. When it is even and well placed in the skin, the tattoo stays legible for years. A line that is too shallow can break up, and one that is too deep can blur. That is why needle choice and machine setup, including the grip, are core skills for an artist.
General information about needles is in the needle entry. We explain how line weight affects how a tattoo lasts in Fine-line tattoos years later: ageing.
