A round shader, or RS, is a tattoo needle with its points arranged loosely in a circle. It is used for shading and filling smaller areas. The wider spacing compared with a round liner lets the artist lay ink softly and evenly.
What is a round shader used for?
Artists reach for it for gentle tonal transitions, filling small areas of colour and shading details. It works for grey wash and small sections of colour illustrations. For large areas, magnum needles are more common, as described in the shading needles entry.
Round shader versus round liner
Both needles have a circular grouping. The difference is how tightly the points are packed. A round liner has tight points and draws a sharp line. A round shader has looser points and leaves a soft mark.
Clients do not need to know these codes. What matters is that the needle is sterile and single-use. We describe how we work with supplies on our process page.
