Fine line is a tattoo style built on thin, precise lines and minimal shading. It is used for delicate flowers, lettering, small symbols and little illustrations. Designs are usually done in black, less often with touches of colour.
How is fine line different from other styles?
The key is line weight. The artist works with a needle that has only a few points, such as a thin round liner. The drawing is light and discreet, so fine line is often chosen for a first tattoo or for a visible but subtle spot, such as the wrist.
How does fine line look over the years?
A fresh thin line is sharp and high-contrast. Over time, along with the skin, it can soften. That is why spacing between lines and the scale of the design matter more here than in styles with a bold outline. Detail that is too fine loses its readability over the years.
